August 2024- Community tour of Marshall Ranch ponds led by Joel Monschke (Stillwater Sciences).

2024 Construction elements include: installing a 90,000-gallon rainwater catchment tank, fencing, and installing super valves and instrumentation to support the flow augmentation. Flow releases will likely begin in late June.

June - October, 2023

Constructed two off-channel ponds and associated plumbing and infrastructure. Installed large wood structures, stabilized gullies, native revegetation, and completed control centers for long-term project management.

Rossi et al. are excited to share a new paper which evaluates the effect of flow augmentation from off-channel storage on habitat connectivity, water quality, invertebrate drift, and juvenile salmonid movement and survival in a small stream.  Their study took place in a Russian River tributary and included an unusually wet summer (2019) and a more typical dry summer (2020). They used categorical and time-series analyses in a before–after, control–impact (BACI) design, along with capture–mark–recapture methods to evaluate the ecological impacts of a 13.9-L/s (~0.5 cfs) flow augmentation. A key finding was that flow augmentation increased the survival probability for salmonids, with a larger effect during the dry summer (24% higher survival for Coho Salmon and 20% higher survival for steelhead) than during the wet summer (no effect was observed for steelhead survival, and Coho Salmon survival increased by 11%). This effort suggests that appropriately designed, small-scale flow augmentations (like the Marshall Ranch Project) can improve conditions for rearing salmonids particularly during dry years. More broadly, it provides empirical evidence (often lacking!) that efforts to restore summer streamflow in small, salmon-bearing streams can yield significant ecological benefits.

SRF was interviewed by Alicia Hamann of Friends of the Eel River for an episode of the EcoNews Report about SRF’s streamflow enhancement efforts in South Fork of the Eel River. The topics of the show include the current construction of the Marshall Ranch Streamflow Enhancement project and the flow enhancement implementation plans in Redwood and Sproul Creek. You can listen to and or read the interview here.
