Water Conservation Education
SRF is actively promoting water conservation techniques and practices to reduce residential water usage in rural watersheds in the Five County region
On January 17, 2014, Governor Brown responded to California's drought by declaring a State of Emergency and requiring that cities work to reduce their water usage by 20 percent. The North Coast, usually a region with relatively high precipitation rates in the Winter and Spring, lacks the infrastructure to cope with a water crisis of the magnitude that our state has faced over the past several years. In many rural communities in Humboldt and Mendocino counties, thousands of landowners and residents are their own water providers, responsible for managing the water that flows through their land for their household and irrigation needs. It is the responsibility of every rural resident to make improvements to their properties and changes in their behavior to ensure that water is being conserved and stewarded, rather than used inefficiently. This is the only way to prepare for extended droughts and to strengthen our water security to meet future needs.
This is a critical time for North Coast communities to initiate immediate and effective water conservation practices. Simple improvements like installing float valves on water storage tanks, installing low-flow showerheads, checking regularly for leaks, and implementing mulching into a garden routine can make a measurable and significant difference to our region’s water footprint.
