Fire-Water-Fish-Futures Webinar: Tribal-Led Climate Modeling Explores Fire Effects on Streamflow
Wednesday, November 6, 2024
12 PM - 1 PM
Leaf Hillman, Karuk tribal member and Co-Chair of the Tribal Northern Region Leadership Council of North Coast Resource Partnership; and Cleo Woelfle-Hazard, Fire Advisor UC Cooperative Extension, shared insights on how prescribed and cultural fire can increase streamflow, and how future changes in snowpack and rainfall will affect conditions for salmonids and other aquatic species in the Klamath Basin.

In collaboration with modelers from the National Center for Atmospheric Research, they developed a downscaled climate model for the Klamath River basin. They presented maps of "maximum prescribed fire" for the Karuk Ancestral Territory, developed with the Western Klamath Restoration Partnership for 2050 and 2100.
